A British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar is located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. According to the 2012 census the city had a population of 30 thousand. The city’s name means the ‘Mountain of Tariq’, referring to the Rock of Gibraltar, after Tariq ibn-Ziyad, an Umayyad general, led his soldiers into the area.
The peninsula is the only British territory in Europe and has an ethnically rich structure. The region is home to British, Spanish, Genoese, Portuguese individuals, just to name a few. Today, Gibraltar has a growing economy unlike many other countries in Europe that have been stagnating. There is a low unemployment rate and the region’s economy is based on general trade, banking, financial services, communications, online gambling, tourism and maritime activities.
