Strigino International Airport is one of the oldest airports in Russian aviation history. In 1938, the airport started serving in the city of Nizhny Novgorod by the Soviet Union. Strigino International Airport was closed to civilian flights during the Second World War by the Soviet Union Air Force and was used as a military air base. After the war had finished, the airport started to operate commercial flights again. In 1965, a new internal terminal building was built at the airport and in 1983, a new runway was constructed. The airport was renovated by the new government after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the airport gained international status in 1994.
