About Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic. It is the first settlement that the European settlers built in America. Santo Domingo was founded as the headquarters of the first Spanish Colony in the New World by Bartholomew Columbus, the brother of Christopher Columbus, in 1496. The city, which was firstly named as 'Nueva Isabella', was the new point of departure for the ongoing discovery expeditions of the Spaniards at that time. Santo Domingo officials claim that the tomb of the famous explorer is in their own city, while it has been proven by several tests that the grave of Christopher Columbus is in Seville. The city is also the heart of the country's trade, industry, finance, and tourism sectors. It has a high volume commercial port. Santo Domingo is also the headquarters of petrochemical, food processing, textile, metallurgy, and cement industries. Santo Domingo is a tropical vacation paradise with its long history and buildings heritage as well as its unique coastline and sandy beaches. Boca Chica and Juan Dalip are the most popular beaches in the city. Santo Domingo is also a city that never sleeps 24 hours a day with its fun nightlife.

The city hosts the annual Latin Music Festival and the National Surf and Wind Surf competitions in the country. Zona Colonial is the area where the city was first founded. The city is surrounded by the buildings dating back to 1500s. The first cathedral, first hospital and first university built in the American continent are located in this area. In addition, Las Damas (Women's Street), the first planned street of the New World, was also established here. El Conde Street and its surroundings, in particular, have a striking and impressive atmosphere in the Zona Colonial, located on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The tropical climate is effective in Santo Domingo, which receives high amounts of rainfall. The city has two international airports. Las Americas International Airport is 33 kilometers east of the city center and La Isabela International Airport is 16 kilometers north of the city.

The most commonly preferred way to get to the city center from Las Americas International Airport is using a taxi or benefitting from the airport shuttle service offered by certain hotels. On the other hand, if you wish, you can rent a car. There is not any means of public transportation or shuttle bus carrying passengers to the city center.

Car Rental    

At Las Americas International Airport, there are a few number of car rental companies. If you drive southwards on the highway numbered 3 with the car you have rented, you can arrive to Boca Chica in about 12 minutes. If you drive westwards on the same highway, you can get to Santo Domingo in about 50 minutes.

Taxi

It is possible to get to the city center by getting on a taxi waiting at the exit of the arriving passenger terminal of the airport.

Hotel Shuttle

Many hotels in the city offer airport shuttle service for their guests. You need to pay additional amount in order to benefit from this service and the amount you need to pay is a little higher compared to taxi. In addition, you should make a reservation in advance by contacting your hotel before your arrival to the city.
