Taldy Kurgan, the center of Kazakhstan's Almaty administration, is located on the western skirts of the Dzungarian Alatau and on the banks of the Karatal River. It is known that the city that developed around the village of Gavrilovka which was established in the second half of the 19th century accelerated its development after the reach of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway line to the region. In addition to the agriculture and industry related schools, there is also a medical faculty in the city. The city’s economy is based on the production of construction materials and various food items.

The population of the city, which is composed mostly of Kazaks, has reached 120 thousand as of 2011. The rest of the population consists of Russians, Koreans, Tatars, Germans, Ukrainians, Uighurs, Czechs, Belarusians, Azerbaijanis, Poles and Kyrgyz.
